As a registered charity and non for profit organization, the Markham Arts Council is committed and driven to streamline our funding directly to the visual and performing arts community in the Greater York Region Area. All our events ensure the following for creatives:

  • To pay performers livable wages with funds collected through grants and generous community donations.
  • To provide visual artists with a platform, while covering installation fees, as well as organizing exhibits, and pairing artists with a likeminded creatives.
  • To invest into new ideas, projects by local youth, alternative art and programming that engages community members and promotes local tourism.

The Markham Arts Council is a registered, non-profit, charitable organization that focuses on capacity building and community engagement. It was formed to enrich the lives of Markham residents through arts and cultural programming and initiatives.

The mission of the Markham Arts Council is to serve the community by providing arts and cultural education by supporting the development of all forms of arts and culture in Markham, thereby enhancing the community’s well-being.

We envision a vibrant and inclusive arts and culture scene in Markham

MAC supports its mission and vision through:

  • Collaboration: Work cohesively with artists and arts organizations from varying disciplines and cultural backgrounds on collaborative projects and initiatives
  • Creativity: Fostering and nurturing creativity by providing emerging and established artists with opportunities to grow and learn.
  • Community: Building a stronger, more unified arts community through advocacy and encompassing all forms of arts in the City of Markham.

 

Throughout the year the Markham Arts Council provides creatives with opportunities through programs like Music on the Street, Markham Talent, Artists Unplugged, Seasonal Visual Art Exhibits and more. We also participate in local events like the Unionville Fest, local LGBTQ+ Pride, Holiday events, and more, engaging local artists in the process.

Yes. MAC staff members sometimes call community members or our supporters. They ask if you want to donate to the Markham Arts Council, and typically ask for just a dollar or more. Even a small contribution of just $1 can make a significant impact when combined with the generosity of others. 

If you have any doubts about the legitimacy of the call, check that: 

  • The call is from Canada or the U.S.
  • The caller states their first name and that the call is on behalf of the Markham Arts Council 
  • The caller knows the Council’s mission and vision and can answer questions about our work 

 

The caller will never ask for your social insurance or passport numbers. If you want to donate, the caller will send you a link to do so, either directed to The Markham Arts Council GoFundMe or the website donation page.

Alternatively, the Markham Arts Council has a long standing Canada Helps Page, that accepts digital transactions, as well as cryptocurrency, eCard’s and Charitable Gift Card donations. Donations are all tax-deductible.

Markham Talent 2023 Open Casting Call is an event to promote performing arts talent in York Region. 

Organized by Markham Ward 6 Councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci & Markham Arts Council, this exciting event is co-chaired by Markham Ward 6 Councillor Amanda Yeung Collucci, Markham Arts Council Chair Stephen Chait and Markham Arts Council Executive Director Shruti Ganapathy. 

City of Markham Mayor Frank Scarpitti serves as Honorary Chair of the event.

All proceeds from this event goes to Markham Arts Council.

In June 2023, the Markham Arts Council promoted visual artists to make designs reflecting the importance of LGBTQ+ Pride in Markham and York Region. We are happy to announce that visual artist Josephine M’Msafiri sent in the winning design!
